The Summer Program is an intense enrichment experience for seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students. Participation ensures the continued success for students as they prepare for an academically challenging high school.
Summer Program for 7th and 8th Graders
For six weeks, students attend morning academic classes of English, math, social studies and science. The afternoons are filled with computer classes, academic tutorials, and exciting electives such as Ballet Folklorico, Improvisational Comedy and sign language.
In small classes, high school and college aged teachers create academic curricula that challenges students to dissect a cow eye, discuss famous leaders in America, outline geometric theorems, and explore a novel on racial discrimination. In addition, special emphasis is put on enhancing students’ life skills such as public speaking, organization, note-taking, and leadership.
A sense of community emerges as students participate in Fun Day of Olympic-like events, Spirit Week, Fancy Meal, High School Night, and Celebration. Eighth-graders are rewarded for their commitment with an overnight camping trip. Under the pillars of Respect, Responsibility, Kindness, Honesty, Trustworthiness and Citizenship, we build a supportive environment that celebrates the unique talents, academic accomplishments and dedication of each individual.
Summer Program for 9th Graders: the Leadership Academy
Before 9th grade, students a 4-week summer program that focuses on high school preparation, community awareness, and leadership. Into daily workshops, we incorporate important college-preparatory skills such as choosing their high school courses, preparing for the SATs and PSATs, joining extracurricular activities, and researching college and scholarship opportunities.
Every Friday during Leadership Academy, students take their learning into the community by performing service at various local organizations. In the past, organizations served have included the
Botanical Gardens,
Presbyterian Night Shelter,
River Legacy Park,
Rolling Hills Tree Farm,
the Salvation Army,
Sunrise Assisted Living Community,
Tarrant County Area Food Bank, and
Wings of Hope. Students also have the opportunity to work as a "Teacher's Assistant for a Day" in the Summerbridge 7th- and 8th-grade program.
Leadership Academy students put their skills and abilities into real-world practice by planning and carrying out an annual fundraising event. In 2007, the students held a silent auction and raised over $1000, which they put in a fund to provide glasses for Summerbridge students in need.
