Who helps my child apply to college?
The responsibility of applying to college belongs to the student. FWCDS prides itself on having a thorough program to help students and their parents as they select a college. The College Counseling Office includes two full-time college advisors with extensive college admission experience as well as an extensive resource center to help students in doing research and completing applications. In addition to the resources for students, there are a series of evening programs that allow parents to learn the best way to support their children through the college selection process.
What is the difference between the “advisor”, the “school counselor” and the “college counselor”?
To provide specialized and personalized guidance, many independent schools separate the many functions of a traditional school guidance counselor. Here is a brief description of that separation at FWCDS:
The “advisor” is a faculty member who meets weekly with a group of students in the same grade level to talk about general school issues including scheduling, discipline, grades, etc.
The “school counselor” is a professional counselor who helps students and their families deal with personal issues.
The “college counselor” is an expert in college admission who provides guidance and advice to students and families about the college selection process.
Where do FWCDS graduates go to college?
Historically, 100% of Country Day graduates attend four-year colleges and universities. For a list of those schools, consult the “Matriculation List” in the “Profile” section of this website.
How do FWCDS students do on the SAT and other standardized tests?
The answer, quite honestly, is VERY WELL! Each year, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation honors approximately one-third of FWCDS juniors and seniors for their performance on the PSAT. The average SAT for graduating seniors is typically at the 95th percentile or higher of all students in the nation. In addition, the record of Advanced Placement (AP) scores is one of the most impressive among high schools nationally.
